The Great Food Rush is On: Amazon & AirBnB move into the food services space

Should you build your own restaurant app now or wait to leverage the major services for online reservations and take-out orders?

Amazon & AirBnB are making moves to leverage the appetite of their huge customer bases. AirBnB wants to lure you out from their rental properties to dinner at select nearby restaurants, and Amazon wants to home deliver your favorite fast foods along with your clothes, books and toys.

In both cases the food services are being provided by partners, with Amazon & AirBnB building the service provider’s features into their websites and apps.

Amazon has partnered with online ordering company Olo to fulfill food deliver orders. Olo builds mobile apps for major restaurant chains including chipotle, Five Guys and Shake Shack.

AirBnB is teaming up with online reservation service Resy, which books reservations for select restaurants in only a handful of major cities in the U.S. right now.

Restaurant reservations and online food ordering have initially been problematic for startup companies. Now

every major online service will be looking to learn from these early mistakes and figure out a reliable and profitable way to fill your tables or deliver your food.
